In the realm of healthcare policy and reform, a significant development has unfolded in Massachusetts, with Governor Maura Healey appointing six new members to the Health Policy Commission (HPC). This decision, aligning with legislation aimed at enhancing market review processes, aims to broaden the Commission's reach and impact on health care affordability. According to a statement obtained by Mass.gov, the appointees bring a diverse set of expertise, from health care management and finance to innovation and workforce representation.
The restructuring of HPC, a move praised by the governor, is designed to "increase its authority to rein in costs and ensure accountability in the health care system." These appointments are central to Massachusetts’ ongoing efforts to keep health care both high quality and affordable, with Health and Human Services Secretary Dr. Kiame Mahaniah and Commissioner of the Department of Insurance Michael Caljouw continuing their involvement as ex-officio Commissioners. Deborah Devaux, retaining her role as Chair, shares over four decades of experience in the sector. Meanwhile, Sandra Cotterell, Christopher Leibman, Umesh Kurpad, Steve Walsh, and Jamie Willmuth join as new commissioners, each bearing credentials tailored to their designated area within healthcare policy.
Lieutenant Governor Kim Driscoll heralded the new Commissioners, expressing excitement over the expertise they bring to the Commission. Devaux, whose career includes significant tenures at Blue Cross Blue Shield Massachusetts and Beth Israel Lahey Health, is joined by Cotterell, a seasoned professional from the Codman Square Health Center, and Leibman of Biogen, who brings a wealth of knowledge in pharmaceuticals and biotechnology.
Additionally, Umesh Kurpad, the former CFO of Point32Health, and Steve Walsh, President of the Massachusetts Health & Hospital Association, deepen the financial and hospital representation, respectively. Jamie Willmuth, who represents health care workforce concerns from his position with 1199SEIU, rounds out the Commission. Each member has been selected to echo a segment of the Commonwealth's healthcare system, united by an objective to deliver quality, affordable health care to every Massachusetts resident, highlighted by House Speaker Ronald J. Mariano in a Mass.gov statement.
